Brief Presentation

The Graphics, Multimedia and GIS Laboratory of the Computer Engineering & Informatics Department of the University of Patras was established in 1994. The educational and research work of the laboratory is being executed within the framework of the Department's Computer Software Section. The laboratory is housed in the Department's new buildings and uses modern computational equipment.

The primary activities of the laboratory include the following:

·         the support of the Computer Engineering & Informatics Department’s undergraduate education in the areas of: Data Structures, Advanced Data Structures and Graphics, Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems, Models and Analysis of Computer Systems, Principles of Programming Languages and Compilers, Internet Technologies, Simulation of Information Systems.

·         the support of the Computer Engineering & Informatics Department's postgraduate education in the areas of: Theory of Basic Data Structures, Management of Multimedia in Databases, Information Retrieval.

·         the theoretical research conducting in areas such as Data Structures and Algorithms, Computational Geometry, Expert Systems, Distributed Systems' Performance Study, Storage of Very Large Data and Bioinformatics.

·         the development of Graphics, Multimedia, GIS, Medical Informatics and Telematics applications and tools within the frameworks of national and EU research projects and innumerable graduate studies of the Department (25 in average each year).

Athanasios Tsakalidis

 Athanasios K. Tsakalidis is a computer-scientist, professor of the University of Patras. Born on 27.6.1950 in Katerini, Greece. He obtained Diploma of Mathematics from University of Thessaloniki in 1973, Diploma of Informatics in 1980 and Ph.D. in Informatics in 1983, University of Saarland, Germany. Career: 1983–1989, researcher in the University of Saarland. He has been student and cooperator (12 years) of Prof. Kurt Mehlhorn (director of Max-Planck Institute of Informatics in Germany). 1989–1993 associate professor and since 1993 professor in the Department of Computer Engineering and Informatics of the University of Patras. 1993–1997 and 2001–today, chairman of the same Department. 1993–today, member of the Board of Directors of the Research Academic Computer Technology Institute (RACTI), 1997–today, coordinator of Research and Development of RACTI, 2004–today vice-director of RACTI. He is one of the contributors to the writing of the “Handbook of Theoretical Computer Science” (Elsevier and MIT-Press 1990). He has published many scientific articles, having an especial contribution to the solution of elementary problems in the area of data structures. Scientific interests: Data Structures, Computational Geometry, Information Retrieval, Computer Graphics, Data Bases, and Bio-Informatics.

 


Christos Makris, took his diploma from the Department of Computer Engineering and Informatics at the University of Patras, in December 1993; the degree of his diploma was 9.46, first amongst the graduates of that year. From 1994 to 1997 he was a post-graduate student in the same Department and in 1997 he completed his doctoral thesis entitled "Basic Data Structures and their applications in Computational Geometry and Information Retrieval" (Supervisor: Prof. Athanasios Tsakalidis). From November 1997 until May 1999 he served his military service. From May 1999 until October 2002 he worked on various projects with the Research Academic Computer Technology Institute, and from August 2003 until October 2004 he served as an Assistant Professor at the Technological Educational Institute of Messolonghi, Department of Applied Informatics in Management and Finance (Faculty of Management and Economics). From October 2004 till today he serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering and Informatics, in the University of Patras, tenured in that position from 2008. His research interests include Data Structures, Information Retrieval, Data Mining, String Processing Algorithms, Computational Geometry, Internet Technologies. Bioinformatics, Multimedia Databases.  He has published over 85 papers in refereed scientific journals and conferences and has more than 450 citations and has supervised the successful completion of four PhD theses, while he served as a co-supervisor in the successful completion of a split-time PhD, in cooperation with the Computer Science Department of the University of Manchester.


Manolis Viennas was born in Athens, Greece in 1985. He received the Diploma of Computer Engineering and Informatics in 2008 and the master degree in Computer Science and Engineering in 2010, both from University of Patras, Greece.His research interests lie in the areas of Web Engineering, Software Engineering, Mobile Applications and Information Systems. He is the author of more than 10 technical papers published in international journals and conferences. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the Technical Chamber of Greece and the Hellenic Association of Computer Engineers and Communications.


 

Dr. Giannis Tzimas is currently an Assistant Professor in the Informatics Engineering Department of the Technological Educational Institute of Western Greece. From 2009 till now he is also the head of the Networks Operation Center of the Institute. 

Since 1995, he is an adjoin researcher in the Graphics, Multimedia and GIS Lab, Department of Computer Engineering & Informatics of the University of Patras, while from 1996 till 2011 he was also the technical coordinator of the Internet Technologies and Multimedia Research Unit of the Computer Technology Institute and Press "Diophantus". 

He graduated from the Computer Engineering and Informatics Department in 1995 and since then he has participated in the management and development of a great number of Research and Development projects funded by national and EU resources, as well as the private sector. His research activity lies in the areas of Computer Networks & Applications, Web Engineering, Web Modeling, Mobile Computing, Semantic Web and Bioinformatics. He has published a considerable number of articles in prestigious national and international conferences and journals.


Vassiliki Gkantouna is currently a postgraduate student at the Computer Science and Engineering postgraduate program of the University of Patras. She graduated from the Computer Engineering and Informatics Department in 2009. She obtained her MSc in “Computer Science and Engineering” in 2011. Since 2009, she is also a member of the Graphics, Multimedia and GIS Lab of the Department of Computer Engineering & Informatics of the University of Patras. Her research activity lies in the areas of Web Engineering, Web Modeling, Databases and Bioinformatics.  She has scientific work published in journals and conferences.


Dr Ioannis Hatzilygeroudis is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Engineering & Informatics, University of Patras. He is Associate Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Artificial Intelligence Tools (IJAIT) and member of the Editorial Boards of the International Journal of Hybrid Intelligent Systems (IJHIS) and the International Journal of Web-Based Communities (IJWBC). He has also been member of the PCs of over 70 AI related conferences and has organized a number of special/invited sessions. Furthermore, he organized and was the PC Chair of the 19th IEEE International Conference on Tools with Artificial Intelligence (ICTAI 2007). He was also General Co-Chair of the 20th IEEE International Conference on Tools with Artificial Intelligence (ICTAI 2008). He has published over 90 papers in international journals, edited volumes and proceedings of conferences and workshops. He has also participated in a number of National and European projects. Currently he is the co-ordinator of an LdV TOI project and leader of the University of Patras, as participant, in another one. His main research interests are: artificial intelligence, hybrid knowledge representation, expert systems, knowledge engineering, intelligent educational systems and intelligent e-learning. He is member of IEEE, ACM, AAAI and EETN (the Hellenic AI Society). He has been member of the Administration Board of EETN for two periods, 2003-04 (General Secretary) and 2005-06 (Vice President).


 

 Yannis Plegas is a graduate engineer in the Department of Computer Engineering and Informatics at University of Patras in Greece. He continued his studies in the same Department and obtained his MSc in “Computer Science and Engineering”. Also he expanded his MSc in PhD studies. He obtained his PhD in the year 2013, with dissertation title “Algorithms and Techniques of Personalized Search in Internet Environments using Underlying Semantics”.  He has scientific work published in journals and conferences. His research interests include Searching, Search Engine Optimization, Lexical and Structural Semantics, Semantic Web, XML, Web Algorithms, Data Mining, Internet Technologies and Information Retrieval.


 

Zafeiria-Marina Ioannou graduated from the Computer Engineering and Informatics Department of the University of Patras in 2011. Currently, she is an MSc student in Computer Science and Engineering program of the same department and a member of the Graphics, Multimedia and GIS Laboratory. Her research interests include Web Engineering, Data Mining in Social Networks and Bioinformatics. She has published papers in refereed scientific journals and conferences.
